Severe Weather

High Winds and Gales

High winds and gales are major contributors to weather related damage in the UK. You may find the following advice useful in keeping you, your family and property safe.

Before the storm

  • Secure loose objects such as ladders, garden furniture or anything else that could be blown into windows and other glazing which may break them
  • Secure doors, garage doors, barn doors and windows, particularly if they face the direction of the wind coming in
  • If possible, park any cars in a garage if available; otherwise keep them clear of buildings, fences, trees or anything else that could fall onto them

During the storm

  • Stay indoors as much as possible, although if it is essential to go out:
  • Avoid walking close to buildings and trees
  • Stay away from boundary walls and fences – if the integrity is compromised, they will collapse on the sheltered side
  • Do not go outside to try and repair any damage whilst the storm is in progress
  • If you must drive take care driving on exposed routes such as bridges, or high open roads, delay your journey or find alternative routes if possible

After the storm

  • Do not touch any damaged electrical/telephone cables that have been affected by the storm
  • Continue to stay away from boundary walls as they may have been weakened
  • Check in on vulnerable neighbours or relatives to see if they are safe and help them make arrangements for any repairs
  • If you need to make an insurance claim, start documenting what has been damaged with pictures and notes
