Energy efficient homes
Around a quarter of all existing buildings are of traditional construction, built before 1918 with methods and materials no longer in common use.
Improvements can be made to improve the energy efficiency of these properties and still keep the historic character. Advice and guidance is available from English Heritage detailing ways to make changes to your property and maintaining your home in a sympathetic way.
Their website has many documents which can be downloaded on how to insulate roofs, walls (early cavity walls and timber framed), floors (suspended and solid) , doors and windows (dormer windows and secondary glazing), lighting and heating advice, and also information on open fires and chimneys.
