The Chancellor recently announced a new scheme to make homes more energy efficient. https://www.parliament.uk/business/news/2020/july/summer-economic-update/ The scheme will offer vouchers, which are applied or from an on-line portal, available for energy efficient improvements and will be available in September. Further details will be announced near the time of the launch, so we await further updates.
Free Handy Man Service
This service has been suspended for 3 months to maintain social distancing with elderly and vulnerable residents following Government guidance. Existing appointments will still take place.
The Council offers a free service for elderly (aged 65 or over) or vulnerable owner occupiers and private tenants. The handy man can install various measures including:
- Security - spy holes, door chains, fitting security lights etc
- Safety - grab and stair rails, half steps, repair broken/uneven paths and steps etc
- Keeping warm - draught proof windows and doors, foil backing to radiators etc
- Dementia services - internal door signs, blue grab rails etc
For further information on criteria and eligibility, please contact the Sustainability Team on 01376 552525. Residents who are Social Tenants (eg Greenfields) should contact their own Housing Association as they may offer their own handy man service.
Fuel poverty can cause vulnerable and low income households to live in cold, unhealthy homes that are expensive to keep warm and increase levels of debt. Braintree District Council welcomes the new local authority flexible eligibility powers for Energy Company Obligation (ECO) Affordable Warmth grant funding as a means to help address this issue. For further information on funding and qualifying criteria please contact the Sustainability Team on 01376 552525.
Funding may also be available through other providers including your energy supplier, please contact them directly.
