Cloth nappies

Why use cloth nappies?

Money saving

From just £80 you can kit your baby out with all the nappies they will need. Even when you take into account laundering costs, you can save up to £1000 compared to disposable nappies.

Essex County Council is offering a £30 refund on the purchase of any cloth nappies or laundering service.

Better for environment

Cloth nappies can be up to 40% better for the environment than disposables. You can reduce your water and electricity usage by not soaking or pre-washing nappies, and by washing in a full load at 60 or 40 degrees. A baby will need between 4000 and 6000 nappy changes in total, that's up to 6000 disposable nappies in a landfill site, or 24 cloth nappies on your washing line.

Plenty of choice

There's fantastic variety of types, colours and styles available. Whether your priority is to choose something plain and simple, saving money, or the latest colours, patterns and fabrics - there's a nappy to suit you.

Easy to use

Many cloth nappies are pre-shaped and fasten with poppers, grips or Velcro. This means there's no need for complicated folding or fiddly safety pins. Modern washing machines make quick work of cleaning them, and in some areas nappy laundering companies will do all the washing for you.

To give you a helping hand to give cloth nappies a try, Essex County Council regularly offers discounted sample nappy packs and vouchers for nappy laundry services.

Environmental benefits

Disposable nappies cannot be recycled and can take hundreds of years to break down. By using cloth nappies you will be reducing the impact on the environment by cutting down the amount of waste going into your black bin.
