Local authorities have seen an increase in the number of fires in lorries caused by batteries inside electrical items being crushed by the compactor on collection vehicles, which in turn can then cause fires.
You should never bin batteries loose, or electrical items which may contain hidden batteries.
Instead, you should recycle batteries by returning them to:
- local libraries
- Braintree's Causeway House
- your local Essex County Council’s recycling centre
You can also return them to any retailer that sells batteries.
Always recycle your electrical items separately as they may contain batteries and precious resources that can be re-used for new electronics. Find your nearest point.
