I'm new to renting

What you pay when you start renting

This page sets out what you can legally be asked to pay when you start renting a home and what payments are no longer allowed. It explains recent changes designed to reduce large upfront costs for new renters.

  • What payments can I be asked for at the start?

When you move into a rented home, your landlord can usually ask for the first rent payment, a refundable holding deposit if one has been agreed, and a tenancy deposit. Other fees are limited by law and most charges are not allowed.
