What is treated as 'income' for the calculation?

Not all income you receive is treated as income for the purposes of calculating your discount.

Universal Credit applicants

For applicants who are in receipt of Universal Credit, the following elements will be disregarded when calculating the level of income:

  • Housing Costs Element
  • Carer’s Element
  • Limited Capability for Work Element
  • Disabled Child Element
  • Childcare Element

Non Universal Credits - working applicants

Some of the most common income that we disregard can be seen below. If you are unsure if a certain income you receive is disregarded or not, you can contact us.

  • Bereavement Support Payment – both rates
  • Boarders Income
  • Carers Allowance
  • Child Benefit 
  • Charity Income
  • Disability Allowance (mobility and care – all rates)
  • Maintenance received
  • Personal Independent Payment (living and mobility – all rates)
  • Permitted Work
  • Some Student Income
  • Support Component of ESA
  • War Disability Pension
  • Working Tax Credit Disabled 
  • Working Tax Credit Disabled +
  • War Widows Pension
