We offer a level 2 award in food safety in catering, we offer an in-person course or an e-learning equivalent. We recommend an in person training course for new employees, either an in person course or an e-learning course for staff undertaking refresher training.
In person training
This is a six-hour course over one day. At the end of the day, there will be a multiple-choice paper with 30 questions about what you have learned.
Course details
The Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering covers:
- prevention of food poisoning
- allergen contamination
- bacteriology
- personal hygiene
- cleaning
- pest control and food safety management systems
The price of the course includes a course booklet, drinks and biscuits.
The Council offices are a short walk from Braintree town centre where you can buy lunch, alternatively please bring your own lunch with you.
The courses start at 9:30am and end by 5:00pm.
What you need to know
You will need to bring your driving licence or passport to prove who you are.
If you need to cancel your course you need to tell us a minimum of eight days in advance. We cannot give you a refund if you give us less than eight days notice.
We run the courses at our office in Causeway House. There is no public parking at Causeway House, but there are a number of Braintree car parks nearby.
Handling food properly
The food hygiene regulations require all food handlers to be trained.
This means that if you own a food business, you are required to make sure all staff are trained.
If food is not handled properly it could result in:
- food poisoning
- severe illness
- potential death
- loss of money
- legal action

E learning
The level 2 e learning course is designed for staff who work in a catering environment who handle prepare or serve food and will inform you of your legal responsibilities and what constitutes best practice in regard to controlling food safety hazards, controlling temperatures, food storage, food preparation, pest control, contamination, personal hygiene, premises cleaning and food safety management systems. You will learn about your responsibilities through a range of interactive exercises, written text and quizzes. Upon completion of this training, you will be confident in your food hygiene knowledge and have all the skills and tools you need to keep people safe and comply with food hygiene law.

Once booked you should expect access to the online training within 7 days.
Please note e learning is not transferrable once the learner’s details have been provided.
