Christmas street market

A free Christmas Lights Switch-on with over 100 market stalls, live entertainment & children’s activities is coming to Braintree next month, and Sat 16th November is the date you want in your diaries.

The annual event will take over the town centre for the day, where Radio Essex will be hosting festive entertainment from 12pm with live music from local singers, dance groups, carol performances from local schools as well as fun activities for the kids up until the light switch on at 5.30pm in Market Place outside Tesco’s.

George Yard Shopping Centre will light up with their switch on at 5pm and a Santa parade will take place between both light switch on events with musicians and dancers and anyone is welcome to join in and dress up. Christmas festivities at the Fountain End of the High Street will run from 1pm to 6pm with local performers singing and performing all genres including Boars Head Productions with Christmas Mayhem and a live band. Their lights will switch on at 5:45pm.

The popular street market will be making a return and it will be the biggest one yet with over 100 stalls spread out across the town including Sandpit Lane, New Street, Market Street and George Yard Shopping Centre.

Visitors will be able to pick up lots of goodies from gifts, hampers, handmade jewellery to Christmas decorations and wreaths. And for when you have worked up an appetite and a thirst after all the excitement and shopping, there will be plenty of stalls selling gourmet food and drinks.

Face-painting, a children’s ride and a street team giving away free goodies will be there providing extra fun for those who want to make the most of their day. There will also be several events over the course of the day across the town, including free children’s crafts at Braintree Museum, a 1920’s pop up bar and an indoor craft market at Braintree Town Hall, and the chance to meet Father Christmas at his grotto alongside giant shiny baubles and a special Christmas fairy in George Yard Shopping Centre.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at Braintree District Council, said: “Our Christmas light switch on is always a great community event and marks the start of Christmas in Braintree. We have a fantastic mix of local entertainment and activities this year and it’s the perfect time for visitors to start their shopping and pick up some special festive gifts. The atmosphere is going to be terrific so we hope to see lots of people in the town centre and join in on the festive celebrations with us – you don’t want to miss out!”
