If there is a dispute about notice dates or whether notice was valid, you should seek advice straight away. In some cases, the tenancy may not have ended when expected.

A landlord cannot force you to leave before the tenancy legally ends. You do not have to leave unless proper notice has been given and, if necessary, a court order has been made.

It is illegal for a landlord to harass you, change the locks, or intimidate you into leaving. This includes repeated visits, threats, or cutting off services.

If problems arise, you can contact Braintree District Council’s housing team, Citizens Advice, or Shelter for support. Getting advice early can prevent the situation from becoming more difficult.

Keeping copies of notices, emails, photos, and receipts can be very helpful if a dispute needs to be resolved.
