Private renters must usually give at least two months’ notice in writing to end their tenancy. A shorter notice period only applies if you and your landlord both agree to it in writing.

Notice should always be given in writing so there is a clear record. You can give notice by letter or email unless you have agreed another written method with your landlord.

The notice period usually starts from the date your landlord receives it, not the date you send it. Your notice should clearly state the date you intend the tenancy to end.

In a joint tenancy, one tenant can give notice to end the whole tenancy. However, all tenants must agree if you want to shorten the notice period or withdraw a notice once it has been given.

Once notice is given, it can only be withdrawn if the landlord agrees in writing. Without agreement, the notice remains valid and the tenancy will still end.
