Giving notice: what private renters need to do

This page explains how to correctly give notice if you are a private renter and want to move out. It covers how much notice is required and what to think about before your tenancy ends.

  • How much notice do I need to give?

Private renters must usually give at least two months’ notice in writing to end their tenancy. A shorter notice period only applies if you and your landlord both agree to it in writing.
