Pedestrianisation of Braintree town centre

Timeline of work

We are now transforming Braintree town centre into a new safe, flexible and traffic-free space to encourage people to visit and use.

We have planned the construction works in phases that will be complete soon.

As we progress through the town centre in a phased way this will mean that some elements of the town centre works will be completed much sooner. We are making considerable progress and many areas are now completed.

Phases

A map highlighting the streets that will have building work in each phase

You can find below details of the latest upcoming construction work.

Various areas may be re-visited throughout the construction process by the contractor to ensure all work is done to the suitable standard before the project is completed and for installing street furniture and trees.

Construction work

Timings

Sandpit Lane along High Street

Remedial works are required to the northern kerb line, paving, grouting, resin and installation of bollards.

This work has started and is due to be completed week ending 8th October 2021.

Great Square

Grouting of paving and installing resin around paving and trees (subject to weather).

This work has begun and will continue throughout the construction work in sections. This is due to be completed by week ending 8th October 2021.

Market Place

This involves a range of works including asphalt installation, ducting, bollards, kerbing and resin.

Most of this work will be completed by w/c 11th October 2021. Once UKPN, the local electricity company, has undertaken works in the coming weeks, we will be able to apply the resin. We expect this to be in October 2021.

Service road at Market Place (near Tesco)

Bank Street

Temporary bollards will be installed to protect the area whilst the area is closed to vehicles before completion of the project.

Vehicles can only access the town centre from 6am-10am from Bank Steet and exit via High Street at St Michael’s Lane and South Street. Emergency access will be available via Bank Street at all times.

This will not impact access to the service road near Tesco whilst work is taking place.

These temporary bollards have been installed

These will be replaced at a later date with a permanent gate.

The whole scheme will be completed in a phased way:

  • Resin and paving – this is ongoing in various areas of the town centre. UKPN, who provide local electrical infrastructure, have recently commenced essential connection works in the town centre as part of their wider programme. In order to avoid digging up any newly laid resin and paving for this work to take place, we will be laying the final resin surface in Market Place when the electrical works are completed. We are expecting this work to start in mid-October 2021. To support these works and to move the project to completion, there may be some areas across the town centre that will be re-visited.
  • Street furniture (street lighting, benches, bollards) – October/November 2021. Some litter bins have been installed and ongoing, as well as boards.
  • Trees – these will be installed during planting season later this year. This is aimed for October/November 2021.

The contractor will be looking at all areas at the end of the project to ensure all work is done to an acceptable standard before the project is completed.

Over the next few weeks there may be overnight works and we appreciate that this may cause temporary noise and inconvenience for those living and working in the town centre, which we apologise for in advance.

We will keep this page updated with any changes to the construction work programme from the contractor.

COVID-19

We have considered the impact of COVID-19 on the project.

We know people want to follow government guidance on social distancing. We will look to provide the safest practical route for pedestrians to use whilst construction is taking place.

We will place advanced signage on-site before any upcoming work. You should follow the local signage, especially where there is less space during construction work.

We will be in regular contact with residents, businesses and stakeholders who may be directly affected by the work at various stages of the project.

We will also update these pages and our social media channels with news and information on the project.

Change to contractor

We have decided to complete the remaining stages of construction work via a new contract.

Progressing the town centre works in a phased way means we will be able to complete some elements soon after our new contractor starts on site.
