How to stand for election
How to stand as a Councillor:
The next scheduled full local elections will be held on 4 May 2023.
Guidance on how to stand for election, including nomination packs can be found on the Electoral Commission website.
We are holding briefing sessions for candidates and agents in the Council Chamber, Causeway House, Bocking End, Braintree, CM7 9HB on the following dates:
1pm - Monday 6 March
6pm – Thursday 9 March
These briefings are in-person and open to anyone interested in standing as a candidate, or acting as the agent for a candidate, at this year's council elections. The main purpose will be to discuss the nomination process and how to complete a nomination form.
If you would like to attend please email the elections team and indicate when you would like to attend.
In order to stand for election, you need to be:
· at least 18 years old and
· a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of a member state of the European Union
You must also meet at least one of the following criteria:
· be registered as a local government elector in the district of Braintree
· have lived or had your principal place of work in the district for 12 months before standing
· have been an owner or tenant of any land or premises in the district for at least 12 months before standing.

How to stand as a Parish Councillor

You do not need any formal qualifications to stand as a parish councillor. In order to stand for election, you need to be:
· at least 18 years old on the day; and
· a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of a member state of the European Union
You must also meet at least one of the following criteria:
· be registered as a local government elector for the parish in which you wish to stand
· have been owner or tenant of any land or premises in the parish for 12 months before standing
· have had your principal place of work in the parish for 12 months before standing
· have lived in the parish area or within three miles of it during the whole of the 12 months before standing
