Braintree District’s finest sporting talent were celebrated last night at the fourth Active Braintree Sports Awards.

The annual awards, held at The College at Braintree, recognise the achievements of individuals, clubs and volunteers to sport and those in the community who make a difference in sport and physical activity as well as encourage others.

Over 100 nominations were submitted this year which is a testament to the efforts of local people taking part in and promoting sport.

Congratulations go to the winners of the evening including Todd Clements from Braintree Golf Club who won Sports Personality of the Year. Todd has moved up the world amateur golf rankings in 2017 and is currently showing as 29th in the world. He has been in Dubai playing this Summer on the MENA Tour and went on to represent England in the home internationals at Moortown Golf Club in August 2017.

Eddie Hawkins from Braintree & District Athletics Club was announced as the winner for The Life Time Services award for his continuous encouragement to athletes of all ages to participate in the sport and reach their goals throughout his 20-year coaching career.

Young Sports Personality Award went to 9-year-old Freia Challis. Freia has raced up two age categories and competed with the boys in the male 11yr age group in BMX, racing against physically stronger and more experienced boys, she achieved 4th overall in the eastern region summer series and a fantastic 3rd in the eastern championships. She also went all the way to South Carolina, USA and made the quarter finals of the World Championships in the summer of 2017.

Freia competed in her third year of national level BMX racing, racing twelve rounds and becoming National Champion in the 9-10 girls category. This was an incredible effort showing great consistency and especially as she is at the lower age band of this group.

Joint winners of the Young Community Volunteer Award went to Summer and Lucia Roberts. Team Roberts have volunteered 99 times at the Great Notley Park Run. Their participation at parkrun has helped their confidence and improved their communications skills by interacting with runners and supporting the community. Both girls also volunteer regularly at the AA Dog Rescue Centre.

Guests of the evening included Valerie Elliott who is an Active Essex This Girl Can Ambassador who spoke about her passion for the fitness industry. Lyndsey Barrett was another guest speaker, who is the Director and Senior Occupational Therapist for Sport for Confidence.

Sponsors of the awards include Fusion Lifestyle, Braintree Freeport, Chairman Councillor Stephen Kirby, Braintree & Witham Times, George Yard Shopping Centre and Milbank Concrete Products, Community 360, Healthwatch Essex, Anglian Community Enterprise and Councillor Frankie Ricci who presented their sponsored awards to both the winners and the highly commended nominees.

Councillor Peter Tattersley, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities and a member of the Active Braintree Network said: “These awards really highlight the depth in sporting talent we have right here on our doorstep which we are committed to supporting and recognise to improve the health and wellbeing of our residents. There were some fantastic athletes, teams, coaches and volunteers in attendance this year who are a real credit to our district.”

All those shortlisted for an award have been automatically entered into the Essex Sports Awards which will take place on Tuesday 5th December at Chelmsford City Racecourse.
