Volunteer driving opportunities

If you are no longer working, are between jobs or have time on your hands, this rewarding and worthwhile role could be for you.

We are always in need of volunteers to drive for us, either in your own car or one of our accessible minibuses. There is no commitment and you can drive as much or as little as you like.

Volunteering is also a great way to enhance your CV if you are seeking employment.

Minibus volunteering

You will need a full driving licence to become a volunteer minibus driver. This needs to include D1 entitlement.

We will train you to MiDas standard (Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme)   . We will also carry out a mandatory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check.

We hire our minibuses with volunteer drivers to non-profit making groups and schools. These are for trips including:

  • day trips to places such as garden centres, places of interest and seaside towns
  • lunch clubs and day centres
  • support groups
  • rehabilitation groups
  • educational trips and after school activities
  • scouting and guiding expeditions
  • social activities
  • shopping

We provide you with:

  • insurance under our cover
  • reimbursement of out of pocket expenses such as entrance fees and refreshments

Car volunteering

As a volunteer car driver you will use your own car as part of our Social Car Scheme.

If you volunteer, you will drive your own car, under your own insurance.   The scheme is for people who are elderly, disabled, isolated or unable to use public transport.

We reimburse your mileage at 45p per mile. There are no tax liabilities and as long as you inform your insurance company, you do not need extra cover.

Volunteer driving does not affect:

  • any benefits you are claiming
  • your availability for paid employment

Volunteer drivers help people get to and from:

  • local health related appointments
  • local shopping
  • visiting friends and family
  • attending clubs
  • going to day centres
