A to Z recycling
Use this A to Z guide to find out how to recycle or dispose of common household items. The listings cover items for your grey bin, paper and card (red-lidded bin), mixed recycling (blue-lidded bin) and those that need to be taken to the recycling centre.
Each entry explains how to prepare items correctly and highlights any specific requirements or alternative disposal options. For example, envelopes should have the plastic window removed before recycling the paper.

Coffee cups

Which bin: Grey bin
Check to see if you can recycle your coffee cup from the shop you bought it from as many retailers now offer take back schemes. If this isn't an option, you can:
Recycle the cardboard sleeve in your red-lidded recycling bin.
Recycle the plastic lid in your blue-lidded recycling bin.
Crisp packets

Which bin: Grey bin
Crisp packets are often lined with metallised plastic (looks like foil), which is not easily separated from the plastic, making them very difficult to recycle.
Please either put these into your Non-Recyclable Waste, or take them to a supermarket soft plastic recycling collection.
Light bulbs

Which bin: Grey bin
These can be recycled at your nearest recycling centre.
Envelopes

Which bin: Red-lidded bin
Please removed plastic windows from envelopes and put these into your Mixed Recycling.
Folders

Which bin: Red-lidded bin
Cardboard only folders can be recycled in your Paper and Card.
If a folder has any type of metal in it then it can be recycled in the metal container at any Essex Recycling Centre (including ring binders).
Hard plastic only folders can be placed in the rigid plastic container at any Essex Recycling Centre.
Shredded paper

Which bin: Red-lidded bin
You can recycle shredded paper in your Paper and Card, ideally in a paper or card container, such as an envelope or cardboard cereal box.
Bubble wrap

Which bin: Blue-lidded bin
Bubble wrap can be used again and again to protect items in the post or when transporting them.
Foil

Which bin: Blue-lidded bin
You can recycle clean aluminium foil in your Mixed Recycling. Scrunch smaller pieces together into a ball to make them easier to recycle.
Cartons

Which bin: Blue-lidded bin
Drink and food cartons (eg fruit juice cartons, milk cartons, crisps tubes, Tetra Pak) can be recycled in your Mixed Recycling. The cartons should be squashed first before placing the lid back onto the carton.
