Cloth nappies

Disposable nappies cannot be recycled and end up in landfill. By using cloth nappies, even occasionally, you can make a positive contribution to the planet.

There are great benefits to using cloth nappies:

Save money

From just £80, you can kit your baby out with all the nappies they will need - less if you mix and match reusable and disposable. Even when you take into account laundering costs, you can save up to £1000 compared to using disposable nappies.

Essex County Council is offering a £30 refund per child on the purchase of any cloth nappies, providing you have a valid receipt.

Better for the environment

Cloth nappies can be up to 40% better for the environment than disposable nappies. A baby will use between 4000 and 6000 disposable nappies in total, which can take hundreds of years to break down.

When using cloth nappies there is no need to soak or pre-wash. Simply wash on a full load at 40 to 60 degrees. Do not use fabric conditioner, as this reduces the nappies' ability to soak up liquid.

Easy to use

Modern washing machines make quick work of cleaning them, and in some areas nappy laundering companies will do all the washing for you.

Plenty of choice

There's a fantastic variety of types, colours and styles available. Many cloth nappies are pre-shaped and fasten with poppers, grips or Velcro.

If you are uncertain on which is the right nappy for your child, you can try different types of nappies until you find the right one.
