Planning permission has been granted to install new solar panels at Silver End Village Hall, helping to secure the long-term sustainability of one of the village’s most valued community assets.
Braintree District Council’s Planning Committee approved the application at its meeting on Tuesday 6 October 2026, which will see 123 solar panels installed on the flat roof of the building on angled frames, generating renewable energy to help power the village hall and reduce its environmental impact.
These improvements will support the transition to lower cost and low-carbon energy infrastructure. They will help to reduce running costs and carbon emissions, improving the long-term sustainability of the building.
The solar panels will not be visible from the ground nearby, helping to preserve the character and appearance of both the village hall and the wider Silver End Conservation Area.
The project forms part of the council's wider £1.5million investment programme to modernise key community assets across the district, ensuring they remain safe, welcoming and fit for future generations.
Councillor Kevin Bowers, Cabinet Member for Finance, Assets and Performance at Braintree District Council, said: "Silver End Village Hall plays an important role for local residents, providing a space for people to come together for community activities, events and support services, so I’m delighted that planning permission has been granted for these improvements.
"Installing solar panels will help reduce the building's carbon footprint and energy costs, making it more sustainable and helping to safeguard this valued facility for the future. By investing more into community facilities like this, we’re making sure they’re fit for the future, more energy efficient and remain welcoming spaces for everyone.”
Work on the installation is expected to be carried out as part of the council's ongoing programme of improvements to community facilities across the district. Contractors already on the site will begin the installation of the panels in November 2026, with the batteries and connection works all completed soon after so that the efficiencies can begin as soon as possible.
