The cost of Braintree District Council’s garden waste subscription will remain frozen thanks to take-up far exceeding expectations.

High demand means the authority can keep single bin charges at £55 for 2025/26.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Transformation, the Environment and Customer Services at Braintree District Council, said: “We are really pleased to be able to retain the price of the subscription for the majority of residents for the forthcoming year.

“With such a high subscription rate of over 37,000 households representing around 64 per cent of households with gardens, it is encouraging to see that so many people are keen and making the effort to compost their garden waste.”

The decision, approved by the authority’s cabinet last night (Monday September 9), keeps the charge below average for Essex councils.

Maintaining the price at £8 for 20 bio-degradable sacks was also agreed too, with a slight rise in additional bin subscriptions by £2.50 to £30.

Just six months into operation the service continues to grow, with around 100 new subscriptions weekly.
