Register a Special treatment
Under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 anyone must register their premise with us if they are providing:
- acupuncture
- tattooing
- cosmetic piercing
- semi-permanent skin colouring/ micro pigmentation
- electrolysis
The following treatments do not need to be registered with us using this regime, however you still need to comply with health and safety at work requirements and as such would be grateful if you would notify the team food&safety@braintree.gov.uk that you are carrying out the treatment
Treatments that do not require registration with Braintree District Council | Who to notify |
---|---|
Dermo rolling | food&safety@braintree.gov.uk |
Micro needling | food&safety@braintree.gov.uk |

Anyone providing a special treatment must comply with the relevant byelaws for that special treatment and must maintain good health and safety standards.
Register a Special treatment
Before you register a special treatment, please talk to us about your proposals to make sure that your premise is likely to be suitable. In particular, ensure that you have a readily accessible wash hand basin with hot and cold running water. This will need to be in the treatment room (the only exception to this may be where the only treatment being offered is ear piercing. Relaxation of this requirement will be assessed on a case by case basis and will depend on the location of the wash hand basin).
All tattooists and body piercers must read, understand and follow the guidance contained within the CIEH tattooing and body piercing guidance toolkit.
All practitioners will need to demonstrate that they have a good understanding of infection control. To supplement the infection control guidance in the CIEH toolkit practitioners may wish to complete an infection control course. There are many online providers. Whilst we cannot recommend any particular course, options include specific courses for tattooists.
You can email our food and safety team or call 01376 557790.
You can register a special treatment online at GOV.UK
When you make your application you will need to:
- supply a passport photograph
- pay a one-off fee of £150
The fee covers:
- our administration costs
- inspecting the premises on a periodic basis
- registration of one operator
We carry out inspections to make sure you are maintaining the correct standards.
If you want to register more than one operator there is an additional charge of £60 per person.
