Scrap metal collector's licence

A Scrap metal collector's licence allows you to operate as a collector in the area of the issuing licensing authority. It does not allow you to operate as a collector in any other local authority area. If you want to operates as a collector in other areas, you will have to get a licence from each local authority you want to operate in.

A Scrap metal collector's licence does not allow you to operate a site. To operate a site you need a Scrap metal site licence from the local authority that the site is in.

Apply for a Scrap metal collector's licence

When you apply for your Scrap metal collector's licence, you will also need to submit:

  • a basic Disclosure and Barring Service certificate. You can apply online at GOV.UK
  • two passport sized photographs - one of which must be signed on the back by a person (similar to the requirements for passport photographs). The photographs will be used form part of your licence which must be visible when looking into the vehicle used to collect scrap metal.
  • the correct fee

  • Licence renewal £177.00
  • Variation of a licence £118.00
