Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO) Licence

Minimum standards for Houses in Multiple Occupation

Our standards provide guidance to tenants and landlords on what to expect in Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO).

They help to make sure HMOs meet a wide range of housing needs and provide good value for money.

These standards are expected in all HMOs whether they need a licence or not.

If you do not meet the standards, we can serve notice and use the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to make sure you bring the HMO up to standard.

Across Essex, there is an Approved Code of Practice for Amenity Standards for Houses of Multiple Occupation.
