Green Heart of Essex

Become a Green Heart Champion

Cllr. Wendy Schmitt, former Cabinet Member for Environment, was passionate about getting everyone involved. She was the driving force behind Braintree District Council’s ‘Green Heart of Essex’ campaign for 10 years.

In 2010, as part of the Green Heart of Essex campaign, the council appealed to local people to become volunteers to help make the district one of the cleanest and greenest in the country.

Over the years, the number of Green Heart Champions has been growing as residents of all ages walk miles within the district collecting sacks full of discarded litter. They work together to keep their neighbourhoods clean, take pride in their communities and aim to keep the district litter free.

Residents sign up either as individuals, families or community groups.

Why not join us and do your bit?

If you are passionate about where you live, join our Green Heart Champions who help keep the district clean and tidy.

You can volunteer, whether you have a little bit of time now and then or more regularly. As long as you have enthusiasm, there are opportunities near you, whatever your age or skills.

Apply to become a Green Heart champion

After you have filled out an application form, we will send you:

  • a health and safety declaration. Look out for this in your spam or junk inbox, as it sometimes ends up there.

After we have received the declaration, we will send you:

  • your equipment, including litter picker and gloves
  • purple bags for the litter you collect

When you have collected some litter in a purple bag, you can tie them up and leave them beside any public litter bin for our crews to collect.

If you live somewhere with no access to public litter bins, you can arrange with us to pick them up from an agreed collection point.
