Devolution and Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) Update

The Government provided a further update on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) on 29 October 2026, following its decision in September to withdraw its previous decision for Greater Essex while it reviewed the wider LGR programme.

The Government has confirmed that it remains committed to Local Government Reorganisation and that the proposals previously submitted for Greater Essex remain under consideration. This means that while the previous decision for Greater Essex remains withdrawn, LGR has not been cancelled. The Government expects to provide a further decision for Greater Essex by early 2027.

There are no immediate changes to the council or the services residents and businesses receive. While we await further information, our focus remains on delivering high-quality services and working with councils and partners across Essex to secure the best possible outcomes for our communities.

The work undertaken with our partners so far remains valuable. It has strengthened relationships and our understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing our communities. We will continue to build on this collaboration, whatever the future shape of local government.

We will keep residents updated as the Government's review progresses and more information about the next steps for Greater Essex becomes available.
