Have your say on number of Hackney Carriage (“Taxi”) Licences issued
Braintree District Council are seeking your views as to whether the Council should continue to restrict the number of Hackney Carriage (Taxi) licences it issues within the Braintree District. Currently we restrict the number to 84 licences and this year we are consulting on the possibility of taking away the limit totally.
Please note we are only consulting on the number of Hackney Carriage (Taxi) licences not Private hire vehicle licences – please refer to the definition below:
Taxis and Private hire
There are two broadly defined types of vehicle, which operate for hire in the Braintree District. These are Hackney Carriages sometimes known as “Taxis” and Private Hire Vehicles, sometimes known as "mini cabs". Hackney Carriages have a “TAXI” sign on the roof. Private Hire Vehicles do not have a TAXI sign on the roof. Taxis can be hailed in the street and can operate from designated taxi ranks. Private hire vehicles can only be pre-booked.
