New historical displays have been installed at the Montefiore Institute in Stisted thanks to a £5,212 grant awarded by Braintree District Council from the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund
The new displays showcase an extensive collection of paintings, photographs, artefacts and documents. The installation will be updated several times a year to showcase historical themes, offering visitors and users of the venue a glimpse into the rich history of the Montefiore Institute and its role in village life. The way the building is currently used will also be documented and reflected in the exhibits.
The grant also paid for the restoration of the original parquet flooring and other improvements to make the building more adaptable for its different needs.
The Montefiore Institute has long been at the centre of Stisted village life. The institute was originally set up in 1909 and was conveyed to be held in trust for the residents in 1925 by Sir Cecil Sebag Montefiore, who had been the Squire of the village and lived at nearby Stisted Hall. It was to be used in ways that would benefit the local community and that remains its purpose today. Initially serving as washrooms and a reading room, the building has evolved over time and is now home to a community shop, a part-time post office and a wide range of clubs and meetings.
The project aims to preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of the building while providing a dedicated museum or gallery space for the community to enjoy.
Cllr Justin Wrench, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Braintree District Council, said: “This project is a great example of how relatively small grants can make a positive difference to our rural communities. By creating a space that celebrates the Montefiore Institute’s history, the trustees of the building are protecting an important heritage asset while giving residents and visitors another reason to connect with the village and its history.”
The Trustees from The Montefiore Institute in Stisted said: “We are very grateful for the contributions from Braintree District Council and the help of the Stisted Historical Archive, village shop and other supporting charities, volunteers and local trades people which has enabled us to make the Institute a more accessible and engaging place for residents. Thanks to this support, a range of historic artefacts that had, in some cases, been long forgotten are now restored and on display for present and future generations to enjoy, helping visitors to appreciate and better understand the rich history of the village.”
Recognised for its significance, the building is listed by English Heritage for its historical and architectural importance.
