A newly amended Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) has come into effect in Braintree town centre, following public consultation.

The updated PSPO features a change to the consumption of alcohol prohibition and the requirement to stop drinking and surrender any containers believed to contain alcohol when made by an authorised officer.

It also includes the addition of a prohibition preventing a person from sleeping in a public place within the town centre in a manner that has a detrimental impact on the quality of life of others.

New signage has been installed throughout Braintree town in the restricted zone, which covers the town centre and Weavers Park.

Cllr Charley Dervish, Cabinet Member for Better Communities at Braintree District Council, said: “The amended Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Braintree town centre will enable both the police and the council’s Street Scene Protection Officers to take more effective enforcement action. It will help us tackle anti-social behaviour associated with street drinking, as well as address issues linked to unauthorised tent encampments where such behaviour has been reported within the PSPO area.”

“We are working closely with Essex Police to create a safer environment for our residents by tackling antisocial behaviour with the powers available to us.”
