New recycling and waste collection service launches across the district

Braintree District Council’s new recycling and waste collection service is now live across the district.

From now on, residents will need to present their recycling in the new bins or boxes provided by the council, rather than using clear recycling sacks.

Paper and card must be separated from mixed recycling. Residents can now also place additional items in mixed recycling, including glass bottles and jars, soft plastics, tubs and trays, empty plastic carrier bags, film, and food and drink cartons, making it easier to recycle more from home.

The council is also encouraging more households to make use of their weekly food recycling collection. As well as benefiting the environment, this can help reduce unpleasant odours in the grey general waste bin, which will now be collected every three weeks.

A new Absorbent Hygiene Product (AHP) collection service is also available to eligible residents who need additional support to manage waste such as nappies or incontinence products. Residents can apply online or by calling the council’s Customer Service Centre.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Leader at Braintree District Council said: “This is a significant change to a major service delivered across the whole district. We recognise that residents and staff will need time to adjust, and that the new arrangements will take time to settle in. With a change of this scale, there may be some issues along the way, such as missed collections, bins being presented on the wrong day, or contamination in recycling. However, our staff will be on hand to support residents throughout the transition. This is about the council and residents working together, learning from experience, and taking action to improve the service.”
