Rural businesses and community groups have received a £156,202 boost thanks to grants awarded by Braintree District Council from the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund.

A total of 18 projects have been awarded grants ranging from £2,000 to £20,000 to support capital improvements in rural areas. A further £20,522 has been allocated with the remaining projects due to complete at the end of August, ensuring the full government funding allocation is being utilised as intended.

The funding is improving community facilities and infrastructure, creating and enhancing green spaces, growing local tourism economies and helping rural businesses expand products, amenities and services.

The initiative is designed to encourage business growth and create employment opportunities in rural areas. This will help improve productivity and strengthen the rural economy and rural communities.

One of the successful applicants Oliver Wass, owner of Oliver Plants in Earls Colne, used the grant to purchase specialist equipment to assist with the potting-on of young trees, enabling the business to increase efficiency and overall output.

He said: “The new potting machine has made a transformational difference to our operation. It removes the back‑breaking manual handling of compost, speeds up production and ensures a much more consistent product. That means higher‑quality plants, increased volumes and greater efficiency across the nursery. We’re incredibly grateful for the support which is helping us scale up sustainably and meet growing demand.”

Another successful applicant, Coggeshall Community Swimming Pool, used its grant to transform its viewing area into a new multi-purpose room.

Kate Roberston, Trustee at Coggeshall Community Swimming Pool, said: “We are incredibly grateful for this funding, which has made a lasting difference to our pool and the wider community. These improvements have enhanced Coggeshall Community Swimming Pool as a true community asset - making it more welcoming, accessible and functional for everyone who uses it. The new entrance and colourful equipment is being used daily by families, schools and local groups, and we’re delighted that these upgrades will continue to benefit our community for many years to come.”

Cllr Frankie Ricci, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure at Braintree District Council, said: “This funding is a positive investment in the future of our rural economy. By supporting local businesses and community groups to improve facilities, expand services and enhance visitor experiences, we are driving sustainable growth and creating employment opportunities in our rural areas. These projects strengthen local economies and help ensure our rural communities remain resilient and robust.”
