“Supporting small rural businesses like RTH Staircases is vital for our local economy."
A Witham-based business, RTH Staircases Limited, has strengthened its manufacturing capabilities with the purchase of a new sanding machine, thanks to a £20,000 grant awarded by Braintree District Council from the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund.
The company specialises in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of bespoke timber staircases for residential and commercial properties and serves major housebuilders, small developers, self-build projects and homeowners looking to enhance their living spaces.
The new sanding equipment enhances the quality of the finish while reducing downtime, boosting productivity and supporting sustainable growth. Its energy-efficient design is also improving environmental performance, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Cllr Frankie Ricci, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure at Braintree District Council, said: “Supporting small rural businesses like RTH Staircases is vital for our local economy. This investment not only helps improve productivity and sustainability but also supports local employment and strengthens skills in the joinery and manufacturing sector.”
Richard Hawkins, Managing Director at RTH Staircases Limited, said: “RTH Staircases Limited is incredibly grateful to the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund for this grant award, which has allowed us to replace our outdated machinery. This new sander isn't just equipment, it's an investment in the company’s future, allowing us to improve finish quality, increase output, reduce waste, and offer new services in 2026. Without this support, we quite simply could not have upgraded to a machine of this calibre or within this timeframe. The Council team was exceptionally helpful throughout the application process, and their support has been instrumental in helping us take this major step forward for our business and the local community."
While the grant contribution helped deliver this upgrade, the investment was only possible thanks to an additional £25,000 commitment from the business itself, demonstrating its confidence in future growth and innovation.
