Braintree District Council is proud to announce the installation of a new, upgraded pool pod at Witham Leisure Centre, replacing the previous unit which had reached the end of its life.
This latest model is designed to make swimming even more accessible for people with disabilities, reduced mobility and other physical challenges.
The pool pod is a state-of-the-art lift mechanism originally developed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, allowing users to enter and exit the pool safely and with dignity. This technology eliminates the need for multiple transfers and has already proven successful in increasing participation among disabled swimmers across the world.
The installation of this new pool pod at Witham Leisure Centre marks a significant step forward in creating inclusive, accessible leisure facilities for all, directly supporting Braintree District Council’s Livewell Strategy, which focuses on improving health and wellbeing by removing barriers to physical activity.
Councillor Lynette Bowers-Flint, Cabinet Member for Housing, Health and Wellbeing, said:
"We are committed to making our leisure facilities inclusive for all. The new pool pod at Witham Leisure Centre is a fantastic addition that will enable more residents with disabilities or mobility challenges to enjoy swimming in a safe and dignified way. This investment reflects our dedication to improving health and wellbeing across the district."
Matt Wickham, Chief Operating Officer, Freedom Leisure, said:
"We are delighted to welcome the new pool pod to Witham Leisure Centre. As a not-for-profit leisure trust, our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, ability or background, has the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of being active. This innovative equipment will make a real difference to customers who face mobility challenges. We’re proud to work in partnership with Braintree District Council to create a more inclusive and welcoming leisure centre for the whole community."
