E-Scooters return to Braintree with new operator Voi

E-scooters will return to Braintree next Wednesday (3 September).

The launch follows Essex County Council’s announcement of a renewed Essex-wide trial, with new operator Voi.

Voi, a leading micromobility provider, brings a wealth of experience to the e-scooter trial, offering advanced fleet management, responsive customer service, and a strong commitment to safety and compliance.

The rollout in Braintree will be phased, with 50 e-scooters introduced each week over the next four weeks, allowing for a smooth and manageable reintroduction of the service.

The upgraded e-scooters feature triple-braking systems and high-visibility LED beacons, designed to enhance rider safety and visibility. Voi will also be tackling pavement riding with real-time GPS tracking and geofencing technology, helping to manage speed and the location of where the e-scooters are used.

Voi will also be working on proposals to introduce a hybrid parking model over the lifetime of the trial, to support safe and convenient parking.  This could include:

  • mandatory parking zones
  • painted or virtual bays in high-footfall areas
  • incentivised parking zones offering ride discounts

Dedicated parking bays are also planned, with a focus on outer areas and industrial zones to support commuting and local business access.

Cllr Frankie Ricci, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Infrastructure at Braintree District Council, said: “The e-scooter scheme offers a sustainable and convenient way to travel, and we know many of our residents value having greener transport options. We are also aware that some residents have concerns about the safety and parking of the e-scooters. We will therefore be working with Voi and Essex County Council, as the lead for the project, to ensure Braintree residents’ views are represented while this trial continues.”
