Braintree District Council is proposing that The Pump House and surrounding recreational land in Castle Hedingham be transferred to the parish in recognition of the local pride in the area.
The proposed transfer would see the land passed to Castle Hedingham Parish Council, giving the parish council and the local community assurance that the area can continue to be enjoyed for many years.
The nearly half an acre plot, located off St James’s Street, is currently leased to the parish council as recreational land for public use although adjacent landowners have retained rights over the land. Part of the field is used as a rewilding site, with a path mowed through the natural environment; the plot also includes a historic pump house, adding character and heritage value.
Cllr Kevin Bowers, Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Performance at Braintree District Council, said: “This proposal reflects our commitment to empowering local communities. By transferring this land, we’re supporting the parish and ensuring this beautiful green space continues to flourish for the benefit of residents and the local community.”
The proposal will be subject to both Councils’ formal governance processes.
