Over the course of the 2024-25 financial year, Braintree District Council has completed 30 projects and delivered meaningful improvements to communities across the district.
From helping local families access secure housing to revitalising public spaces and supporting community initiatives, the Council has worked hard to deliver meaningful outcomes for residents.
One of the key successes of the year was the rollout of the new landlord incentive scheme, which provided secure, privately rented accommodation to 51 households, preventing the risk of homelessness and helping families rebuild stability. The Council also exceeded its housing target with the delivery of 295 affordable homes – a vital step in helping local people access good quality and secure homes.
Health and wellbeing were also high on the agenda, with the popular Beat the Street campaign engaging over 11,000 residents. The interactive challenge encouraged people of all ages to walk, cycle and scoot their way to better health while connecting with their communities.
Investment in play and leisure facilities included the installation of a new play area at Mill Park Drive in Braintree, as well as the refurbishment of play spaces at Meadowside in Braintree and Oxford Meadow in Sible Hedingham.
The year also saw the refurbishment of three skate parks – Spa Road in Witham, Weavers Park in Braintree and Ramsey Road in Halstead – providing young people with safe, modern and outdoor spaces to keep active.
The Council invested £340,000 in initiatives to support residents with the cost-of-living crisis and in addition awarded £77,000 to community projects through its Councillor Community Grant scheme with initiatives supporting defibrillator installations, church hall repairs, sports facility refurbishments and renewable energy installations.
In line with the Council’s commitment to climate action, £100,000 in grants were awarded to 11 community groups helping them reduce carbon emissions. The funding supported practical upgrades such as solar panels, energy-efficient lighting and heating systems, insulation and new windows.
These outcomes are just some of the highlights from a wider programme of work that continues to support residents, communities and the environment.
Cllr Graham Butland, Leader of Braintree District Council, said: “These achievements demonstrate how targeted investment, and strong partnerships can bring benefits to our communities. From supporting local families to tackling climate change, we remain focused on delivering projects that support long-term wellbeing and resilience.”
As the Council looks ahead to 2025/26, work will continue to build on these successes, with more initiatives planned to support residents, enhance local facilities and deliver value for communities.
