A new multi-use games area (MUGA) has officially opened in Steeple Bumpstead.

The MUGA has been created on Camping Close in Steeple Bumpstead village which features a new multi-use games area with a games wall, and an outdoor table tennis area for people of all abilities to enjoy.

The project, led by Steeple Bumpstead Parish Council, was funded by a £52,000 Section 106 contribution, money the council secures from developers linked to planning permission, from the Poppy Field development by Enterprise Property Group Limited. The site also sees a new zip wire, funded by a Community Initiatives Fund via Essex County Council and the parish council.

Residents from across the village joined the parish council, Cllr Peter Schwier from Essex County Council and Cllr Diana Garrod from Braintree District Council on Sunday, 13 July for the official opening, to try out the new sporting equipment, taking part in games and enjoying a picnic.

The parish council shaped the improvement plans based on public feedback, with top choices including a multi-use games area, a refurbished basketball court, and a zip wire.

Councillor Gabrielle Spray, Cabinet Member for Planning at Braintree District Council, said: “This fantastic new facility is a brilliant example of how Section 106 contributions we help secure from housing developers can make a real difference in our communities. We are grateful to the parish council for moving this project forward and using this funding to create an active and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy.”

Kerry Barnes, Chair of Steeple Bumpstead Parish Council, said: “This has been a project that was in the planning for quite a time, but the results demonstrate that it was time well spent. Thanks must go to all those that were involved in the project.”

Councillor Diana Garrod, ward member for Bumpstead at Braintree District Council, said: “The new games area is a great addition to Steeple Bumpstead – residents are already enjoying it, and it will be a lasting benefit for the local community."

In 2024/25, over £1.6m was spent by Braintree District Council from Section 106 contributions, either directly or by providing funding for projects led by town and parish councils, community groups or sports providers.
