Town centre improvements have begun in Witham and will start in Halstead later this week, improving the high streets in both towns, aiming to create more aesthetically pleasing town centres with improved street furniture.
There will be multiple phases of implementation starting with work on Braintree District Council owned land this week.
In this initial phase of work, Witham will see bench repairs, railing painting, a bin replacement in Mill Lane car park, new bicycle parking in Newlands Drive car park and the installation of a wayfinding monolith in Mill Lane car park. Halstead will have new cycle parking and shelter in Sainsbury’s car park and an installation of a wayfinding monolith by the library.
The second phase of work will take place on land owned by Essex Highways and will include further street furniture replacements and repairs, street lighting, paving repairs and road signage.
Braintree District Council are investing £600,000 on the physical improvement works, which includes contributions from Section 106 funding.
Work on Braintree District Council land has begun this week and the rest of the work will follow shortly after. The works should cause minimal disruption and there will be no road closures.
Witham Town Council and Halstead Town Council were both consulted on these works.
Cllr Frankie Ricci, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at Braintree District Council, said: “I am pleased these works will finally be going ahead and will bring improved facilities to Witham and Halstead as well as dedicated cycle parking.”
