Braintree District Council’s public consultation is now open, and residents are being invited to share their views to help shape the future of waste and recycling collection services in the district.

Changes are proposed to improve recycling rates, reduce waste to landfill, ensure financial sustainability and compliance with the Environment Act 2021’s, Simpler Recycling policy.

The consultation seeks the input of residents and stakeholders on how to improve services and understand any impact of the proposed changes.

The proposed preferred collection approach includes a:

  • weekly food waste collection for all properties
  • fortnightly paid for collection of garden waste (where requested)
  • three-weekly collection of general waste
  • alternate fortnightly collection of paper and card in one bin collected one fortnight
  • alternate fortnightly collection of glass, metals, plastic and food and drink cartons in another bin collected the following fortnight

The proposal includes the provision of additional bins for recycling in place of clear sacks, where these can be accommodated.

The consultation will run from today (Monday 6 January) until midnight on Sunday 2 March 2025.

The survey and more information can be accessed using a QR code on the council’s printed material or via the council’s new engagement portal at: www.braintree.gov.uk/wasteconsultation

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Transformation, the Environment and Customer Services and Deputy Leader at Braintree District Council, said: “The proposed approach would help us to increase the amount we recycle, reduce what is thrown away, meet government policy requirements and reduce our costs in the long-term.

“We are keen for residents to join us on this journey of transformation and help shape the future of the service, so please don’t waste the opportunity to have your say.”

Those without internet access are asked to call the council’s Customer Service Centre on 01376 552525, who will be able to help with any queries and ensure that they have an opportunity to respond to the survey.
