Braintree District Council set to discuss plans to host a public consultation on the future of waste collections

The Council will be discussing plans to hold a public consultation on the future of waste collections.

Braintree District Council is considering introducing changes to its waste collection services to enhance recycling rates, reduce the amount of general waste sent to landfill and to ensure the council complies with the Simpler Recycling legislation set out in the Government’s Environment Act 2021.

The council’s Cabinet will discuss the proposals and consider a public consultation on Monday 16 December 2024.

If approved, an eight-week consultation will open on Monday 6 January 2025 and run until Sunday 2 March 2025, providing the opportunity for residents to feedback on the council’s proposed approach to waste and recycling.

Councillor Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Transformation, the Environment and Customer Services and Deputy Leader at Braintree District Council, said: “The consultation will allow an opportunity to help shape our waste collections, from April 2026. Feedback from residents will help us to improve recycling, manage the cost of required changes to the taxpayer as well as how best to achieve our climate change aspirations.

"No decisions have been made yet, and all feedback will be considered before a final report is presented to Cabinet in May 2025.”

If approved, Braintree District Council will promote the consultation across the district to encourage residents to have their say by responding to a survey.
