Sport and volunteering groups and individuals were celebrated on Wednesday 30 October in an awards ceremony held at Maltings Academy in Witham.

The awards, sponsored by Braintree Village, recognise the efforts of those who give their time to help our communities to be better and healthier places to live, work and play.

Eleven awards were given out on the night, including Volunteer Group of the Year to The Empire Theatre Trust and Sports or Physical Activity Club of the Year that was jointly awarded to Gosfield Pickleball Club and The Martial Arts Centre.

Volunteer of the Year award went to Paul Eldridge from Valley Green Football Club, for his work tirelessly supporting local football over the years.

Cllr Mary Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Supporting Communities at Braintree District Council said: “It was a difficult task narrowing down the winners for tonight, there are so many inspiring people in the district. Congratulations to all the winners and highly commended.”

John Wood, Chairman of Active Braintree Foundation, said: “The people who give their time to providing sport, health and wellbeing and community projects to the district make such an important contribution to the community.”
