Braintree District Council has launched a public consultation on the introduction of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) covering Braintree town centre.

Braintree District Council has launched a public consultation on the introduction of a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) covering Braintree town centre.

The 28 day consultation will allow the public to share their views on the proposed PSPO and any experiences they may have had of antisocial behaviour in the town to be added to the evidence to support the implementation.

Braintree town centre has been subject to increased and ongoing antisocial behaviour over the last four years impacting on local businesses, residents and those visiting the town. The town has also recently been identified in the top 10% of Essex Police’s incidents of ASB.

A PSPO can be introduced for a public area where the local authority is satisfied that certain conditions have been met including the identification of activities that have had a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those in the locality or is likely that activities will take place and is likely to be persistent or continuing.

Some of the behaviours that will be covered by the PSPO will include alcohol consumption, aggressive behaviour, sex acts, criminal behaviour, use of illegal substances and verbal and racially abusive language.

Residents and businesses can see the full details of the PSPO on the Braintree District Council website and share their feedback by midnight on Sunday 4 August 2024.

Cllr Mary Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, said: “We have listened to our residents and businesses and are working to put in place a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for Braintree town centre following reports of antisocial behaviour. We’ll be working alongside Essex Police to deliver what we can to create a safer environment for all.”

Residents can share their views on the consultation here.
