Statement on the Men’s Shed project in Great Yeldham

"We look forward to working positively and proactively with Great Yeldham Parish Council on bringing this matter to a positive conclusion."

A Braintree District Council spokesperson said: “Our planners had a positive meeting with Great Yeldham Parish Council yesterday (15 May) to discuss a way forward for the Men’s Shed project located in the storage containers near the recreational ground in Great Yeldham.

Two planning applications were recently refused (one retrospective, one proposed) for the stationing of the containers as their industrial character and siting contravenes national and local planning policies.

We know how important the Men’s Shed project is and want to reiterate our support for community projects like this one. We have no objections to the proposed use and agree that the Men’s Shed project is a positive initiative with many health and social benefits, but this support cannot override proper planning processes.

We cannot legally re-open or reconsider these planning applications as formal decisions have been made. The applicant, Great Yeldham Parish Council, has the right of appeal and can if it so wishes appeal against the refusals. During the appeals process, an independent planning inspector will reconsider the case and will make the final decision. Following further engagement with the Council, the other alternative would be to submit a revised planning application for consideration.

We look forward to working positively and proactively with Great Yeldham Parish Council on bringing this matter to a positive conclusion. We cannot stress enough however how important it is to seek advice and obtain planning permission before undertaking any form of development.
