Walking groups are a friendly and accessible way for residents to get active, enjoy the outdoors and meet new people. Led by local volunteers or community partners, walks usually follow tried-and-tested routes and are open to a range of ages and abilities.
Whether you are looking to improve your physical health, support your wellbeing, build confidence or simply enjoy a regular walk with others, joining a local walking group can be a simple first step.
Braintree District Walkabout
Braintree District Walkabout is a community walking group led by volunteers aimed at helping people stay active, social and connected. It welcomes walkers of all abilities and ages and has a great turnout. Walks are friendly, free and social with no need to book ahead.
Most walks last around 75–90 minutes on flat, accessible paths. Their Monday walk also offers a longer option for those who want more of a challenge.
Run as part of the Braintree University of the third age group – the group walks on the third Thursday of each month, starting and finishing at a pub where they usually stay for lunch.
Group members take turns in leading the walks, of between four and six miles, which gives a nice variety of locations.
The Braintree and District Outdoor Pursuits Club (BDOPC)
A small mixed group of outdoor enthusiasts. The club meets in Braintree, but members are drawn from a wider area.
Their monthly Sunday events are normally in Essex with the occasional foray further away with a weekend to the hills. Walks are up to 10 miles and club cycles range from 20 to 30 miles.
