Hard plastics are made from a number of complex resins that don’t melt down evenly or contain hazardous chemical additives, which makes them trickier to process and not economical to recycle. Our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is run by a plastics recycling company, but this is not a type of plastic they currently recycle in house. They therefore need to find an ‘offtaker’ - another company that will buy large quantities of hard plastics to recycle. As hard plastics are currently not economical to recycle, there is no market for them and the MRF is unable to find an offtaker.
Hard plastics are also not currently accepted for recycling at your recycling centre, so if they can't fit into your Non Recyclable Waste (grey bin) and are not WEEE, they have to go into the general waste collection. The recycling centres hope to be able to accept them for recycling again at a later date.
