If a development has fewer than 5 properties and is not on a busy road we will not give it a street name.
If the development has fewer than 5 properties but is on a busy road we may give it a street name.
If an applicant requires a new street name they need to follow this protocol:
The developer needs to contact the relevant parish/town council and ask for their suggestions for a new street name(s).
If the site is in the unparished area of Braintree town, the Street naming and numbering officer will contact a local historian for street name suggestions.
The Street naming and numbering officer will decide on an appropriate street name suffix.
New street names must be individual, not difficult to pronounce or spell and not conflict with other names in the locality.
Naming a street after a person
We only name streets after people if they have achieved good work in the community. If we name a street after a person we will only use their surname.
We will take into account that people could be sensitive to naming streets after controversial or notorious figures.
Objections
We advertise new street names at the site for 21 days. This allows people to raise objections with the Magistrates Court. If someone raises an objection the court will contact the developer will and find an alternative name.
If nobody raises an objection to the street name we will create the official postal numbering schedule. We will share this with the following people:
- the applicant
- Royal Mail
- Emergency Services
- Land Registry
- Valuation Office
- Our Council Tax department
- Our Elections department
- Our Waste department
- Our Highways department
Street nameplates
The developer should install the nameplate. The SNN officer can advise on the location of the plates if required.
Our Street Scene department is responsible for Damaged street nameplates.
