Pitch perfect – Witham Hockey club joined council to open new ‘state of the art’ sports facility in Witham

Official opening of Witham Sports Ground artificial pitch

Thousands of sports-happy children and adults can now reap the benefits of a £150,000 investment to re-surface the all-weather synthetic turf hockey pitch at the Sports Ground in Witham.

It was officially opened this Saturday (16th September) by the Council alongside Fusion Lifestyle and council dignitaries, to allow Witham Hockey Club members the first opportunity to have a club day to start off the new 2017/18 season.

Councillor Peter Tattersley, Cabinet Member for Health and Communities said: “We’re delighted with this first-class sports facility which will benefit residents in Witham from both hockey and football players, school pupils to family groups. The new synthetic pitch provides a vastly improved playing surface on which full sized hockey matches can be played, as well as mini hockey and football training. New goals and covered seating alongside the existing flood lighting and changing rooms makes this one of the best new hockey venues in Essex. It’s a pleasure to welcome the hockey club here today to get a taste of the new facility they can now enjoy at Witham Sports Ground.”

Alex Green, Contract Manager for Braintree at Fusion Lifestyle said: “It is a privilege to be involved in the running of the incredibly popular and important leisure sites across Braintree and it is our role to ensure that they continue to serve the community for years to come, whether that’s by providing a major new addition to a site, or refurbishing much-loved facilities. The new pitch at Witham Sports Ground really is superb. As an independent charity, we invest heavily in creating, restoring and transforming local facilities, and we believe communities across Braintree will really benefit from the new development.”

Funded by Braintree District Council, the 97m x 61m floodlit all weather pitch will serve the needs of Witham Hockey Club, alongside other clubs in the district.

Local schools, clubs and other organisations who would like to find out more about booking the all-weather pitches can contact Witham Leisure Centre on 01376 514910.
