Spa Road improvements take a step forward

Improvements to Spa Road shops area gains planning permission

Improvements to the car park, lighting and landscaping around Spa Road shops in Witham took a step forward on Tuesday night when the project was granted planning permission.

The work will now go out to tender, and the Council is looking to start the project before the end of the year.

The refresh of the area around the Spa Road shopping precinct will include better lighting, a rework of the existing carpark layout to include more spaces and accessible parking and landscaping enhancements. Braintree District Council is working in partnership with Greenfields Community Housing and has the support of Witham Town Council.

Cllr Wendy Schmitt, Cabinet Member for Environment and Place at Braintree District Council, said: “This area has long deserved some love and attention and the area is well used by residents, shoppers and parents picking up children from school. This work will make the area more accessible and will make it look better and feel safer.”
Local councillor Bill Rose, who spoke at the planning committee on Tuesday August 1, said: “I am delighted the work to improve the area which is currently austere and dull has taken another step forward. The benefit to the local community will be considerable, not only for nearby residents but encouraging a wider clientele from Witham West as well passing trade along one of the busy gateways into Witham.”

Sandra Crosby, Housing Director at Greenfields, said: “Local residents have been involved from the very beginning to shape the work; which is great. These changes should help to improve the lives of people in this community; increasing their pride and security in their surroundings. I look forward to seeing the difference they will make to local residents.”

The project has undergone extensive consultation with the local community. Find out more:
