Meeting current and future demand for Braintree - plans for Braintree Town Centre
Update on plans for Braintree Town CentrePublished: Monday, 23rd November 2015
Braintree will have a brand new modern health centre to help meet the growing demand for local health services as part of rejuvenation plans.
Braintree District Council’s Cabinet will meet on Monday, November 30 to discuss revised plans for the site behind the Town Hall.
Originally planned as a retail-led generation scheme, it was later decided that it would not be financially viable but by working with the developers, NHS England and Mount Chambers Surgery, Braintree District Council has announced an alternative scheme which may see:
- A brand new health facility
- Four restaurants/ café units
- A car park
- A bus interchange
- An area of quality public open space
Cllr Tom Cunningham, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “Changes to shopping trends have meant that we’ve changed the focus of the redevelopment to bring a better variety of places to eat to Braintree town centre. This will bring more people and families to the town, helping our existing businesses and our night time economy.”
Leader of the Council Cllr Graham Butland said “We’re growing as a town and a district so we all need to be much more forward thinking about our community facilities especially when it comes to our health. This is a real opportunity for us to help provide modern medical facilities to meet both current and future demand for GP services.”
Carole Theobald, Locality Director for NHS England (East) said: “This offers potential for an exciting development in Braintree and providing increased provision of healthcare services for patients in the local area. Any developments will be subject to a business case being submitted and approved by partner NHS organisations, to ensure the best outcome for our patients. We will also ensure that patients are engaged in discussions regarding these plans, to ensure that we can continue to support the development of modern services that meet our patient needs."
The next steps will see Henry Boot Developments Limited preparing and submitting the specification and the scheme drawings to Braintree District Council by December 31, 2015.
