North Essex Garden Communities

Introduction to Garden Communities

North Essex Garden Communities now have a dedicated website

Colchester Borough Council, Braintree District Council and Tendring District Council are working together, alongside Essex County Council in order to identify an agreed strategic approach to the allocation and distribution of large scale housing led mixed use development. This will include employment opportunities and infrastructure provision, in the form of Garden Communities.

Areas of search for three new garden communities were contained with the Draft Local Plan consultations of all three local planning authorities in 2016. Specific sites and boundaries have not yet been determined but will be refined through the Local Plan decision-making process.

The North Essex Garden Communities project has the potential to be one of the most important projects of its type in the country.

At this stage the councils involved are developing business cases as well as a range of supporting evidence for each of the proposed new communities.

To support the process the four councils commissioned a review by Lord Kerslake, previously head of the Civil Service and former Chief Executive of the Homes and Community Agency and a dedicated team of experts from a range of relevant disciplines.

The review highlighted a number of areas of strength, and made a number of recommendations on the delivery of the scheme, and the councils are now jointly developing an action plan to move the project forward.
