Council Tax Rebate

The Government has announced an Energy Bill Rebate for households in England from April 2022 to help with rising energy costs. This includes a one-off payment of £150 to most households in Council Tax bands A-D, excluding empty or second homes.

Eligible households who pay by direct debit

The majority of people who pay their Council Tax by direct debit will now have received their Energy Rebate. This will be displayed as a £150.00 credit on your bank statement ‘Braintree DC Payments’ . We are working to resolve any mismatches between bank account details and Council Tax records and pay those residents. A letter will be sent to you if this is the case.

Eligible households who do not pay by direct debit

If you do not pay by direct debit, including those who pay by standing order, letters are currently being sent out to you to invite you to apply for your rebate online. You will not be able to apply online until you receive your letter through the post.

Over 5,600 households who have been sent a letter still have not claimed their rebate. We will be sending out reminders to these households and if no response is received by 6 July 2022 we will offset their rebate against their Council Tax account.

We would encourage those who haven’t yet replied to the letter to claim their energy rebate to do so, giving you the option as to how you would like your energy rebate paid to you.

We have over 50,000 payments to make as part of this council tax rebate so please do bear with us as it may take some time to process them all. The team are working extremely hard to get all payments out as quickly as possible, therefore please do not call or email the team asking about progress, as this will only delay matters.

You do not need to do anything to receive the rebate we will contact you if you are entitled to it. The rebate will not need to be repaid.

Households not covered by the main scheme

There will also be discretionary funding available that will be for households not eligible for the main scheme, including council tax bands E-H. Once we have an approved scheme in place for this, we will update you.

We will continue to update this page as and when we have more information. Please also keep an eye on our Facebook  and Twitter  accounts for any further updates.

If you do not know which band your property is in, you can check your council tax band online Alternatively check your 2022/23 Council Tax bill which were delivered to households earlier this year.
