Test and trace self-isolation payment

The government have announced that low-income households who have received a notification from the NHS test and trace service to self-isolate from 28 September 2020, may be able to claim financial support.


To be eligible to receive the self-isolation payment, you must:

  • have received, and be complying with a notification from the NHS test and trace service to self-isolate
  • be employed or self-employed
  • be unable to work from home and will lose income as a result
  • be in receipt of one of the following benefits:
    • Universal Credit
    • Working Tax Credit
    • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
    • Housing Benefit
    • Income Support
    • Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
    • Pension Credit

If you are not receiving one of the qualifying benefits, you may be able to apply for help through a discretionary scheme if:

  • you have no more than £16,000 capital/savings (Revised 1st April 2021)
  • you are receiving CTS or immediately before the self-isolation period, you were employed or self-employed working more than 16 hours per week and you earned no less than £80.00 gross per week (the lower threshold) and not more than £500.00 NET per week (upper threshold) (Revised 1st April 2021)

You are not eligible for the scheme if:

  • you are quarantining after travelling abroad (unless you test positive on or after 28 September during the 14 day quarantine period)
  • continue to receive full wages while you self-isolate
  • can work from home during a period of self-isolation
  • have not received a notification from the NHS test and trace service requiring you to self-isolate
  • you received your notice to self-isolate before 28 September 2020
